Jainism in India, Palitana

Palitana, in the southern province of the state of Gujarat, holds the unique distinction of being the world’s only mountain with more than 900 temples, and more specifically Jain Temples in the world.

Palitana hosts more than 3,000 temples atop the Shatrunjaya Hills. Exquisitely carved in marble, these temples have been built by generations of Jains beginning in the 11th-century and spanning a period of over 900 years. The main temple atop the hill is dedicated to Jainism’s first Tirthankar Lord Adinath.
