Buddhism in India, Bodh Gaya

Deeply significant and religious, Bodh Gaya is probably on of the most significant pilgrimage sites for all Buddhists globally. Associated with the Maha Bodhi Temple complex, the site of Bodhimandala where Gautam Buddha ultimately achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree.

According to Buddhist recordings, it was in circa 500 BC that Prince Gautama Siddhartha, wandering as an ascetic, reached the banks of the Phalgu River near the present town of Gaya.

Sitting in meditation under a Bodhi Tree or Ficus Religiosa. After three days and three nights of sustained meditation, he claimed to have attained enlightenment and the insight into the answers he had long sought from himself. After seven weeks of travel within the region he would ultimately move on to Sarnath to spread his newfound insights and wisdom.

This region of Bodh-Gaya was the nucleus of Buddhism for centuries after that until it was interrupted by the invasions of the Turkic invaders from the west in the 13th century.

Today the sight associates itself to the Mahabodhi Temple complex, which contains the Vajrasana or Diamond Throne and the holy Bodhi Tree.
